BAB's New Holiday Tradition

MMTE drops 18 in 1st inning, coasts to win a la Mother's Day

SANTA CLARA: A true at-bat fest took place on Mon May 28--this 7-inning exhibition game marked the 3rd game played over Memorial Day Weekend, quite a leap from the single match played in 2006. Though only 8 regular BAD ASSes were able to attend, a 5-on-5 game was possible thanks to recruitment by Ed DaRosa and Bryan Bush.

Exhibition

At 10:30 only 5 BAD ASSes were present and hope for 5 more to appear were bleak at best, especially with regulars Rob Flores (out of town) Leland Yow, Kevin Kuzmiak and Joel Stauffer (work) unavailable.

But then, Simas and Trinh were reached and both pledged to arrive around 11am. Next, Davis retrieved Chowdhury from a deep sleep during which Navarez and Berry were recruited---meaning GAME ON!! Matsui and Bush were chosen as captains.

On Mother's Day, Bush's Honey B Bombers scored 18 in the 1st inning which would be enough for victory. Today Bush was on the receiving end of the 1st inning, game-clinching 18-spot! Among many other whacks, Simas tattooed a 3-run HR to center during the onslaught.

MDM answered with 5 in their half, including a LONG homer to left by Navarez.

Matsui (twice) and Trinh went deep over the next 3 innings while holding MDM scoreless. By the bottom of the 6th MMTE led 27-7.

Successive ground rule doubles by Minor and Berry helped MDM to a 6-run 6th that could have been more, but after Bush doubled, Simas, Trinh and Davis erased an overanxious DaRosa in a pickle between 2nd and 3rd to retire the side.

Trinh, who missed the 5/27 doubleheader, made up for lost time by drilling 2 insurance HR for MMTE in the 7th inning. MDM scored 2 in their half but succumbed to defeat 31-15.

STATISTICAL NOTES

  • Davis stroked an unusual 3 ground rule doubles.

  • MDM managed only 9 XBH, only one (Navarez) went over the fence.

  • Simas and Matsui each hit for the cycle with 8 RBI apiece, while Trinh finished with 3 HR and scored a whopping 8 runs.

  • Berry played his first BAB game and went 3-for-7. Navarez, playing for the first time since his 2003 cameo, went 5-for-8 with the homer.

AWARDS

A proud Matsui rewarded his team's victory by appointing them all Gold Glove winners and---along with Yow, who stopped by in his work truck to deliver some chips and dip during the 5th inning---BAD ASSes of the Day. No Small Penis was named.

MORE NOTES

  • This contest is the first one Flores has missed all season, ending his IronMan bid. Matsui is now the only BAD ASS to play in every 2007 game.

  • Rather than pitcher's hand rules, the game was played with no buck short. This only proved a major detriment during the 18-run MMTE 1st.

  • In the bottom of the 5th, CF Matsui was rewarded for a mistake when, after Minor singled, he overthrew Simas covering 2B. The ball rolled all the way to 1B Chowdhury who applied the tag to a decelerated Minor! JD
